"It was just after midnight on a cold March night when I was making my rounds in the barn looking for who who were ready to lamb. Having a 200 ewe flock gets a little crazy during the lambing season, but I never got tired of seeing each new little lamb arrive. They are born covered in a slippery membrane that the ewe licks until the lamb is on its feet and nursing. This ewe delivered her first lamb outside in the shed and followed me as I carried her newborn lamb into the insulated barn and placed it under the heat lamp. Soon she laid down and delivered a second lamb. I put it near the heat lamp with the other lamb to keep it from chilling. The mother never stopped licking and talking gently to her lambs even when they tried to stand. They called back to her with their tiny voices. I ran into the house to get my camera and got back just in time to take several photos before the ewe stood up. She delivered yet another lamb, all three the same weight and size. This time of bonding is so important for the ewe and her lambs. Later the lambs will need to find their mother in a huge pasture filled with over 400 sheep. What a precious, quiet moment that I will always treasure."
