"These mares are from the wild horse herd of the Onaqui Mountains located in Utah. In the summer of 2022 I spent a week with them enjoying the dynamics of the wild herd life. After a full morning of photographing them it was beginning to get hot. All at once the whole herd of over one hundred horses began to slowly move toward the waterhole. As they got closer the horses began to trot to the water in a cloud of dust. As these mares entered the water they kept moving and walking as they got a drink. I loved the way the water fell off their legs and moved ahead of their muzzles as they continued across the waterhole getting a drink. The buckskin mare is one of my favorites. I think she is the same little filly I fell in love with on my last trip here four years ago. What a day to remember!
